Last fall, wildfires roared down the slopes of the Smoky Mountains and hurt so many of the people and wildlife I love here in Tennessee. It was surreal. The firefighters fought for days, and the numbers of homes destroyed and lives lost kept rising. It was a very emotional time. However, even though at first it looked very bleak, the fires exposed the beautiful loving core of the community like never before. We truly loved our neighbors as ourselves. It was an outpouring of love that wouldn't have happened without the pain that the fires caused. That's when I started this painting...

In a charred forest of the Smoky Mountains, this momma bear and her precious cub comfort one another. Warm rays bring life to the tiny green buds and flowers as spring arrives in all its glory to cover the dark memories and ashes. The right side of the painting has less life in it while the left side is full of life. I created it that way so that your eye sees the ashes, then you see the love of the mother and child, then the rebirth. The forest will now be more beautiful than before, and the land will heal. Love got them through the winter, and now it's over. They're alright. Love got us through the pain and devastation, and now we are healing. We made it. "We're Alright."

Spring can inspire especially after a long winter. One of the first signs of spring in Tennessee are redbuds, and I've always loved them and the vibrancy they bring so I wanted to include them in one of my paintings. The subdued warm and cool hues of the background paired with subtle tones of a titmouse's feathers seemed like a perfect match and create a harmonious image. I hope this piece inspires you and brings the excitement of spring into your life.

This is a painting inspired by life on the farms here in the mountains of Cades Cove, Tennessee! I always love capturing light and feeling in my paintings. A good painting can transport you in time or make you feel like you're in the scene. In this piece, heaven's light is breaking through the clouds of a September cold front. You can feel the fresh cool air blowing in over the mountains. The trees are just faintly tinged with autumns warm tones and some mallard ducks have arrived from Canada to spend winter on a southern farm. The windmill stands strong and faces the winds of change as the sun casts its light on this homestead that reminds us of a simpler, more beautiful time gone by.

In the middle of chaos and pressure, a person can find peace and calm by entering into their happy place.  Often in the middle of all the stress of living in this world, I close my eyes and picture myself sitting on a rock in the forest where the light is streaming down through the leaves and glistening off a smooth section of a creek where there is just a small gurgle of water trickling by. I picture myself sitting with someone that loves me whom I love, and all seem to calm down. I often say a quick prayer of thanks for my “Daddy” being in control, knowing what is coming, and being big enough to handle it and take care of me. Calmness settles in, and I’m happy and peaceful again. I can do this anywhere – on a plane, at my kitchen window, or sitting in my studio.   It brings peace in the middle of a storm of chaos. I imagine Frederick Olmsted had this in mind when he and the New York city planners set aside 788 acres of land in the 1850’s for what would become a magical escape from the noise and pace of a growing city. Among the many paths and trails through the park are more than a dozen different bridges that display architectural perfection on a grand scale, and Gapstow Bridge is one of my favorites.  Nestled in the southwest corner near the pond in the corner of the park, the Plaza Hotel rises thru the trees on the right, as well as some of the other grand buildings of the turn of the century.  These were the days when gargoyles and Gothic accents adorned elaborate buildings that were beautiful works of art.  I chose to paint the city from a simpler time - before the rectangular glass and steel skyscrapers began to change the city to a more “modern” look. Several grand carriages will give you a ride through the park. We actually visited the city for my son’s 16th birthday in February right after a snowstorm blanketed the park with even more quietness. Enjoy the calm in “Carriage Park” and make it your place of peace in the middle of the chaos.
